1. Encouragement from the Word: Passion Week
by Pastor Todd

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor who stood up to the Nazi party in World War II Germany, has famously said, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die” (Cost of Discipleship, Pg. 89). Bonhoeffer eventually was martyred for his faith and courage in a Nazi concentration camp on April 9, 1945. What did Bonhoeffer mean by this quote and what led him to live it out?

Of course, the answer comes from Jesus Himself. Jesus calls us to the following:

“And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'” (Luke 9:23, ESV)

This Passion week we are reminded afresh that suffering and self-sacrifice are apart of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Our Messiah – The Messiah – was a suffering servant (Isaiah 53). Jesus went to a cross that we will never have to go to. And yet, He calls us to follow His example of self-sacrifice. This is something that this current crisis is stretching each and everyone to do.

Since He suffered so greatly for our salvation by going to the cross in our place, one of the many benefits of this is how this helps us in the day-to-day. Listen to what the author of Hebrews reminds us of:

“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14–16, ESV)

Jesus calls us to take our cross and follow Him. He does not ask us to this without promising to help us to do this. Draw near to Him today as you face whatever difficulties that come your way. You are not alone. You have a great High Priest to sympathizes and is able to help you.
